how do i cancel or change my subscription?

Apple manages it, not nil. In nil, open profile, then about, then manage subscription. Or go to apps.apple.com/account/subscriptions, or open Settings on your iPhone, tap your name, then Subscriptions. Cancel at least 24 hours before your current period ends to avoid the next charge.

i paid, but nil says i haven't

On the screen that asks you to subscribe, tap “restore purchases”. nil asks Apple to confirm your purchase on this device. Make sure you are signed in with the Apple Account you bought it with.

my subscription ran out. does sos still work?

Yes. sos is never behind the paywall. When a subscription runs out, a card with the price, “restore purchases” and “manage subscription” covers the app's tabs, and the sos button in the middle of the tab bar still opens.

how much does nil cost?

$44.99 a year with the first week free, or $5.99 a month, billed by Apple. The free week is Apple's introductory offer, once per customer. The price section on the home page has the details.

how do i open sos fast?

Tap the round sos button in the middle of the tab bar. Outside the app, say “I'm craving, nil” to Siri, press and hold nil's icon and tap “i'm craving”, or tap the round sos widget on your lock screen. While a craving is on, a Live Activity keeps sos on your lock screen.

what happens in sos?

The water rises for four seconds and falls for four: breathe in as it rises and out as it falls, for as long as it takes. After two breaths, a few small things to try show up: water, a walk, a cold face, or your own picks. If you chose someone on the people tab, one of them reads “text” and their name, with the message already written, and you decide whether to send it.

When it passes, tap “it passed. i'm good.” If it doesn't, tap “i slipped. log it, no lecture”.

what happens when i slip?

You log it, and that is all: no lecture. A slip clouds that one day and nothing else. Your clear days, your day count, the money you've saved and your milestones all keep counting.

what does “days clear” count?

Every finished day without a slip, or a buy your plan didn't allow, counted at midnight. A cloudy day is one pale bead that doesn't count, and nothing already counted comes off, so the number never goes down. Your best run is your longest unbroken stretch of clear days.

how do i change my prices or my quit plan?

Open the profile screen. Your prices and your quit plan live there, and every dollar figure nil shows you comes from the prices you enter.

how does the morning pledge work?

Each morning, at the time you pick, nil sends a morning pledge. Tap it and nil opens on today with the day pledged, or press and hold it and choose “pledge today” to pledge without opening the app.

what do the widgets show?

The home screen widget and the lock screen widget show your day count and the money you've saved, and a tap on either opens nil. The round sos widget opens sos.

how does the garden grow?

From your day count alone, through eight stages: seed, sprout, patch, garden, meadow, knoll, hillside and valley, at days 0, 1, 7, 14, 30, 90, 180 and 365. A slip never takes any of it away.

what else does nil show me?

The money you've saved and where it's heading by the end of your first year, a calendar of your clear days, your cravings week by week and your quietest stretch, and a general recovery timeline from your quit date, based on the timelines public health bodies report for stopping nicotine. The timeline is not medical advice.

why isn't the widget or Live Activity updating?

Open the app once. The widget and the Live Activity read from a storage area they share with the app, and the app refreshes it when it runs. iOS also limits how often widgets refresh on their own, so a quick open is the fix.

why am i not getting reminders?

Open Settings on your iPhone, tap Notifications, then nil, and make sure Allow Notifications is on. Do Not Disturb or another Focus can also hold reminders back.

does nil work on iPad or Android?

No. nil is for iPhone only, running iOS 17 or later, and for now it is on the US App Store only.

your data

where is my data?

On your iPhone. nil has no account and no server, so the developer never gets a copy. If you back up your phone, the data is in that backup too, and a new iPhone restored from it gets nil's data back. To wipe it, open profile, then about, and choose “delete all my data”.
